HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. The standard is issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to guard workers from hazardous substances together with hazardous waste. In understanding HAZWOPER, employers and employees promote a safe workplace that prevents injuries and fatalities.
Who needs HAZWOPER training?
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 1910.120(a)(1)(i-v) and 1926.65(a)(1)(i-v), HAZWOPER training affects five distinct groups of employers and their employees. These are:
· Clean-up operations -- required by a governmental body, whether federal, state, local, or other involving hazardous substances -- that are conducted at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites;
· Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976.
· Voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental body as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites;
· Operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities.
· Emergency response operations for releases of, or substantial threats of releases of, hazardous substances regardless of the location of the hazard.
What are the trainings available?
In an article from Occupational Safety and Health by Barry R. Weissman said that, “the amount of initial training depends on what you are going to be doing at the site and how much you know about what you are going to be working with.”
· HAZWOPER 40-Hour is mandatory for workers that complete actions with hazardous substances. Upon completion of training, all employees must have additional hands-on training on Personal Protective Equipment of their jobsite and 8 hours of hands-on training with a qualified instructor. Three days of field experience with an employer or potential employer must also be included. HAZWOPER 40 training covers topics included in 29 CFR 1910.120.
· HAZWOPER 24-Hour training is required by the government for employees going to an Uncontrolled Hazardous Waste Operation. Prior to joining the worksite, employees must have 24 hours of preliminary training and one day of supervised field experience.
· HAZWOPER 8-Hour is annual refresher training. Refresher training may be given in segments as long as the required 8 hours have been completed on or before the worker’s anniversary date.
Where can I get training?
Various OSHA-accredited online providers conduct HAZWOPER 24-hour, 40-hour and 8-hour training. These courses may be accessed at home or any places with an internet connection. Upon completion of the course, a certificate will be given to each student. However, the online courses will not conduct the necessary job site training as it will be done by employers.
